To promote love and unity among Udu sons and daughters and foster cooperation with people of Urhobo descent in diaspora and others who identify with our cultural heritage, and ideals of love and unity. The Association shall promote charitable, and educational projects in Udu Kingdom.
I wish to welcome you to our community on behalf of Emo R Udu of North America.
We are sons and daughters whose ancestral home is Udu Kingdom, with it's
own local government area, in Delta state, Nigeria.
Sometime, in 2016 a group of six (6) descendants of Udu local government area
discussed the issue of forming a group in North America to promote friendship
and social interaction among UDU sons and daughters. We agreed to meet regularly to fashion
out the type of organization we wanted to form.
We did seek and obtained the blessing of our Ovie, HRH Barrister Bethel Delekpe,
king of UDU Kingdom, during his visit to the USA.
We decided that we should form a nonprofit organization, Incorporated in the USA
to promote the ideas stated above and at the same time look for ways to assist our
community, Udu local government, in Nigeria.
We reached out to the leadership of UPU, North America and in 2018, we sent a
delegation to the UPU conference in Chicago. At that conference, UPU, North
America encouraged us to proceed with our set goals.
Subsequently, we drafted and approved our Constitution, got approval from the
IRS as a 501C3 not-for-profit organization.
Our community is naturally blessed with fertile land for agriculture with
many Rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds which form a vibrant echo system for
fishing, growing cassava, plantains, bananas, coconut, and palm oil.
We are also home to several oil wells and gas fields, which have turned
out to be an ecological disaster for people.
We are home to the first Steel plant in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
It is interesting to note, that the Delta steel plant has been moribund for more
than 15 years.
Our strategically located community which is endowed with so many natural resources has become a huge disappointment and disadvantage to our people.
In consultation with the President General of the Udu council of Chiefs, we
co-sponsored the Udu leadership Summit in September 2021. This was a successful
event with multiple presentations from experts of industry, agricultural, education
and health care. This was an opportunity to look into our past and fashion a way forward.
After the surprise floods of 2022, our community bottomed out with regards to food security, because all the farms were lost to this devastating flood.
Therefore, we decided to help with food security in the Udu community. To that effect,
in 2023, we arranged for over 1 million high yielding cassava stems, from the Institute of
Tropical Agriculture, a renowned research institution. These cassava stems were
supplied to the farmers in the villages at no cost. This was very successful and fulfilling.
Going forward, we intend to support the Udu community in the areas of food security,
education and health care, with emphasis on primary health care, and prevention with
emphasis on infant and maternal mortality.
With respect to the 2024 planting season, after due consultation with the President General
of the Udu council of chiefs and various community leaders, Emo R Udu of North America,
has agreed to the provision of high yielding plantain and banana suckers to the farmers
and all residents of the Udu community of Delta state, Nigeria.
We ask all of our friends to join us in this effort to help the poor of UDU local government area of Delta State, Nigeria.
Thank you.
Obukohwo Francis Sido, MD.
